Tour Overview

The Marrakech to Fes desert tour is one of the classic routes in Morocco, connecting two imperial cities through the High Atlas Mountains, the ancient kasbahs of the south, and the Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi. Starting from your Marrakech hotel or airport, this 3-day journey covers the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, a night in the desert, and the Ziz Valley before arriving in Fes.

Day one crosses the High Atlas and takes you south through Ouarzazate and along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley. Day two follows the gorge road east to Todra before continuing to Merzouga for a sunset camel trek and a night at the desert camp. Day three brings the Sahara sunrise, then the long drive north through the date palm corridor of the Ziz Valley, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, and the alpine town of Ifrane before the final stretch into Fes.

Available as a private tour from Marrakech to Fes or as a shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour, both formats depart daily year-round and are operated directly by Pro Morocco Tours with no intermediaries. For a full breakdown of what each format includes, visit our inclusions guide or our shared vs private comparison.

Tour Highlights

  • Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres on day one
  • Walk through Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and film location
  • Drive the Valley of Roses and the Dades canyon road east toward the desert
  • Walk the base of Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise nearly 300 metres

  • Pass through the Ziz Valley palm corridor and Middle Atlas cedar forest on the way to Fes

3-Day Marrakech to Fes Itinerary

Three days, three very different landscapes. The route moves from mountain to desert to the imperial north, with each day building on the last. If you are weighing 3 days against 4, our 3-day vs 4-day comparison explains the trade-offs clearly.

Day 1Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Dades Valley

Your 3-day desert tour begins with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. Leaving the city behind, travel toward the High Atlas Mountains, following a scenic road through traditional Amazigh villages and dramatic mountain landscapes. Cross the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with stops at panoramic viewpoints to admire the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Continue across the mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its traditional earthen architecture and fortified ksar. Take time to explore the historic village on foot before continuing to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the gateway to the Sahara. There will also be time for lunch and comfortable breaks along the route.

From Ouarzazate, the journey continues through the palm groves of Skoura and the beautiful Valley of Roses, passing kasbahs, small villages, and changing landscapes before reaching the Dades Valley. Enjoy the impressive scenery and distinctive rock formations before continuing to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Distance: approx. 330 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 6–7 hours, excluding sightseeing, lunch, and stops

Day 2Dades Valley ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and continue toward Tinghir and the Todra Valley. The route passes through striking mountain scenery, traditional villages, and palm-filled valleys before reaching the spectacular Todra Gorge. Take a relaxed walk beneath the towering canyon walls and enjoy some free time for photographs and exploring the surroundings.

From Todra Gorge, continue toward the Sahara through the changing landscapes of southeastern Morocco, passing towns such as Tinjdad and Erfoud. There will be a stop for lunch along the way before continuing toward Merzouga. As you approach the desert, the landscape becomes increasingly arid until the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

Upon arrival in Merzouga, meet your camel caravan and begin your camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes. Stop among the dunes to admire the sunset before continuing to your desert camp. Settle into your private tent and enjoy dinner followed by traditional music around the campfire beneath the Sahara sky.

Distance: approx. 260 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing, lunch, and stops

Day 3Merzouga Desert ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Midelt ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Fes

After breakfast, leave the Merzouga Desert and begin the journey north toward Fes. Travel through Erfoud and Errachidia before reaching the spectacular Ziz Valley, where a panoramic stop provides beautiful views over the extensive palm oasis and the surrounding mountains.

Continue through the changing landscapes toward Midelt, located between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas Mountains, where you can stop for lunch. From Midelt, travel across the Middle Atlas Mountains as the dry southern landscapes gradually give way to forests and greener mountain scenery. Stop at the cedar forest near Azrou, known for its impressive cedar trees and Barbary macaques.

The journey then continues through Ifrane, a picturesque mountain town known for its distinctive architecture and landscaped surroundings. After a short stop, continue toward Fes, where your 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour comes to an end. As this is the longest driving day, your private driver will make comfortable stops along the way for coffee, photographs, restrooms, and stretching whenever needed.

Distance: approx. 470 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 7–8 hours, excluding lunch, sightseeing, and rest stops

Frequently Asked Questions

Is three days enough from Marrakech to Fes?

Yes. Three days covers the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge, a Sahara night at Erg Chebbi, and arrival in Fes with regular stops throughout. Travellers who want more time in the desert or shorter daily drives can choose the 4-day or 5-day version.

Private or shared — which should I choose?

A shared tour starts from €249 per person and travels with a small group on a fixed schedule. A private tour gives your group exclusive use of the vehicle and guide, with full flexibility over pace and stops — pricing depends on group size, accommodation tier, and dates. Read our shared vs private guide for a detailed comparison.

What does this tour cost?

Shared tours start from €249 per person. Private tour pricing is calculated on group size, accommodation tier, and travel dates. Use the booking form above or contact us directly for a quote.

Where do we sleep on this tour?

Night one is at a hotel or riad in the Dades Valley with dinner and breakfast. Night two is at a desert camp inside the Erg Chebbi dunes with dinner, breakfast, a camel trek, and Berber music included. The camp tier varies by accommodation option — see the section above. Our desert camp guide explains what the night is like in detail.

Is the camel trek included?

Yes. A sunset camel trek across the dunes is included for all departures. Travellers who prefer not to ride can transfer to the camp by 4×4 instead. Read our camel trek guide if you want to know what the ride is really like.

How much driving is involved each day?

Day 1: approximately 360 km and 6.5 to 7 hours. Day 2: approximately 270 km and 4.5 to 5 hours. Day 3: approximately 470 km and 7 to 8 hours. All days include regular stops every 90 minutes or so for sightseeing, food, and rest.

Are meals included?

Two breakfasts and two dinners are included — one of each at the Dades Valley accommodation and one of each at the desert camp. Lunches and drinks are at your own expense throughout.

Can I do this route in reverse from Fes to Marrakech?

Yes. The same itinerary runs in reverse as a 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour for travellers flying into Fes and out of Marrakech. Visit our Fes desert tours page for departure options.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes. Families are welcome on private departures and we can add comfort stops to suit younger travellers. The camel ride, the gorge walk, and the Ait Ben Haddou climb are all manageable for children. The 4-day version is often a better fit for families as it breaks the longest driving day in two.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes. We can add nights, upgrade accommodation, include optional activities, or extend the route to Chefchaouen, Casablanca, Tangier, or Essaouira. Contact us with your dates and we will put together a proposal.

What time does the tour start and finish?

Pick-up from your Marrakech hotel or airport is usually around 8:00 AM on day one. Arrival in Fes is typically between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM on day three, depending on road conditions and time spent at stops.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice at the time of booking.
