Tour Overview

The 5 days tour from Marrakech to Fes is the most relaxed format on this route, adding an overnight in Ouarzazate on day one that shortens every subsequent driving day compared to the 3 and 4-day versions. The itinerary covers the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, the Skoura Oasis, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, and Erg Chebbi before a full desert exploration day on day four and the long drive through the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas to Fes on day five. Two nights near the dunes — one at the camp, one at a Merzouga riad — give you time to experience the Sahara properly rather than passing through it.

This is a private tour. Your vehicle and driver-guide are exclusively for your group throughout all five days, with no fixed stops beyond what is listed. Departures run daily year-round from €549 per person. For a comparison of the 3, 4, and 5-day formats, read our day-count comparison guide. For a full breakdown of what is included, visit our inclusions guide.

5-Day Marrakech to Fes Itinerary

Day 1High Atlas Mountains and Ait Ben Haddou to Ouarzazate

Morning pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. The road heads southeast into the High Atlas, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres with stops at viewpoints above the Amazigh ridge villages. South of the pass the landscape opens into the pre-Saharan plateau and the road drops toward the Draa valley.

At Ait Ben Haddou you cross the river on foot and climb through the ksar — a UNESCO-listed fortified village built from sun-dried earth, set above the Ounila River. After exploring the lanes and the hilltop granary, the road continues to Ouarzazate for the night. At roughly 210 km, day one is the shortest driving day of the entire 5-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour, leaving time to explore the town or rest before the days that follow. Read more in our Ait Ben Haddou travel guide and Ouarzazate travel guide.

Distance: approx. 210 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 4 to 5 hours including stops

Day 2Skoura Oasis, Boutaghrar Tracks, and the Dades Valley

After breakfast, the route heads east through the Skoura Oasis — one of southern Morocco’s largest palm groves, fed by ancient underground irrigation channels. Inside the oasis sits Amridil Kasbah, a 17th-century fortress that remains one of the best-preserved examples of traditional pisé architecture in the south. From Skoura, the tour leaves the main road and follows off-road tracks through Boutaghrar, a less-visited route that takes you across desert plateaus and through remote Amazigh settlements.

Along the way, a visit to a local nomad family includes mint tea and a brief glimpse of a way of life that has changed little across generations. The afternoon continues through the Valley of Roses — named for the Damask rose fields planted along the riverbanks — and into the Dades Valley for the evening. For more on this area, read our Todra Gorge vs Dades Gorge guide.

Distance: approx. 180 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 4.5 to 5 hours including stops

Day 3Todra Gorge and the Dunes of Erg Chebbi

The route heads east through Tinghir and into Todra Gorge, where the Todra River has cut a narrow canyon through the High Atlas with walls rising close to 300 metres. A walk through the gorge beyond the main tourist section takes you into the quieter upper canyon. From Tinghir the road continues through Erfoud — known for its fossil workshops and date production — and across the hamada toward Merzouga.

The orange wall of Erg Chebbi rises from the flat plain without warning in the late afternoon. On arrival you transfer to the desert camp by camel or 4×4 in time for sunset over the dunes. The evening includes a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber music around the campfire, and a night sky with no light pollution. Our desert camp guide explains the full experience.

Distance: approx. 270 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 4.5 to 5 hours including Todra Gorge

Day 4A Full Day in the Merzouga Desert

Wake early for the Sahara sunrise from the dune crest. Read our Erg Chebbi sunrise guide for the best dune positions and timing. After breakfast, day four is the defining advantage of the 5-day tour from Marrakech to Fes — a full day in the Merzouga region with only 50 to 80 km of travel by 4×4.

The day covers Khamlia village, home to a Gnawa musician community whose live performance is one of the most memorable moments on this route. From Khamlia the 4×4 continues to a nomad family living in the desert, fossil-rich plains where ancient marine fossils surface from the rock, and panoramic viewpoints above the dunes. The seasonal desert lake, when water levels allow, adds another landscape entirely. The afternoon is free to walk the dunes independently, arrange an optional sandboarding or quad biking session, or simply rest. Overnight at a hotel or riad in Merzouga village. Read our Gnawa music guide before you go.

Distance: approx. 50 to 80 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 2 to 3 hours including sightseeing

Day 5Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas to Fes

The final day of the 5 days desert tour from Marrakech to Fes is the longest drive of the entire trip at approximately 470 km. The route leaves Merzouga through the Tafilalt oasis, one of Morocco’s oldest date palm regions, before following the Ziz Valley north. A viewpoint stop above the valley shows thousands of palms stretching through the canyon below — one of the most striking landscapes on the entire tour. Our Merzouga guide has further context on the region you are leaving behind.

The road climbs into the Middle Atlas through Midelt, where cedar forests replace sand and the air cools considerably. Near Azrou, Barbary macaques live wild among the cedars — a short stop here is one of the more surprising moments on the northbound drive. The road then passes through Ifrane, the alpine town at 1,650 metres, before the final stretch into Fes. Drop-off at your Fes hotel or riad completes the tour.

Distance: approx. 470 km  ·  Drive time: approx. 7 to 8 hours including stops

Why the 5-Day Format Works

The main structural advantage of the 5-day tour from Marrakech to Fes over the 3 and 4-day versions is the overnight in Ouarzazate on day one. This reduces the first day drive from 360 km to 210 km, which means every day that follows starts from a shorter distance. No single driving day on this tour exceeds 270 km until the final stretch to Fes.

  • Shortest driving days on this route. Day two and day four have under 200 km of driving. Day four has only 50 to 80 km by 4×4.
  • Two nights near Erg Chebbi. One at the desert camp, one at a Merzouga riad. You experience the Sahara at sunset, midnight, sunrise, and in the full heat of the following day.
  • Ouarzazate as a proper stop. On 3 and 4-day tours, Ouarzazate is a lunch stop. Here it is an overnight with time to visit Atlas Studios or simply walk the town in the evening.
  • Private throughout. Your vehicle and guide are exclusively yours. No shared departures at any point.
  • Transparent pricing. No hidden costs. See our cancellation policy before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose 5 days instead of 3 or 4 days from Marrakech to Fes?

The 5-day tour adds an overnight in Ouarzazate on day one that cuts the first driving day nearly in half. This makes all subsequent days shorter and more relaxed. You also get two nights near Erg Chebbi instead of one, and a full desert exploration day with minimal driving on day four — neither of which is possible on the 3 or 4-day formats.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. Your group has exclusive use of the vehicle and driver-guide throughout all five days. No other travellers join your departure at any point.

What does the 5-day tour from Marrakech to Fes cost?

Private departures start from €549 per person. The final price depends on group size, accommodation tier, and travel dates. Use the booking form above or contact us for a personalised quote.

Where do we spend the four nights?

Night one is in Ouarzazate. Night two is in the Dades Valley. Night three is at a desert camp inside the Erg Chebbi dunes with dinner, breakfast, camel trek, and Berber music. Night four is at a hotel or riad in Merzouga village. Read our desert camp guide for full detail on night three.

Are meals included?

Four breakfasts are included, one each morning. Dinners are included at the Dades Valley accommodation, at the desert camp on night three, and at the Merzouga hotel on night four. The Ouarzazate dinner on night one is not included. Lunches and drinks are at your own expense throughout.

Is the camel trek included?

Yes. A sunset camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes is included on day three. Travellers who prefer not to ride can reach the desert camp by 4×4 transfer instead. Read our camel trek guide for what to expect.

What is covered on the Merzouga exploration day?

Day four covers the Merzouga region by 4×4. Stops include Khamlia village for a live Gnawa music performance, a visit to a local nomad family with mint tea, fossil-rich desert plains, panoramic dune viewpoints, and the seasonal desert lake when water levels allow. The afternoon is free for sandboarding, quad biking, or independent dune walks.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes. The 5-day format works well for families as the daily drives are shorter and day four has minimal road time. The camel ride can be replaced with a 4×4 transfer if needed.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes. We can add extra nights, upgrade accommodation, include optional activities, or extend the route to Chefchaouen, Casablanca, Tangier, or Essaouira. Contact us with your dates and preferences.

What time does the tour start and finish?

Pick-up from your Marrakech hotel or airport is normally around 8:00 AM on day one. Arrival in Fes is usually between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM on day five, depending on road conditions and stops.
