Every landscape on this route is different from the last. The High Atlas, the pre-Saharan south, real Erg Chebbi dunes, and the Middle Atlas cedar forest — none of it repeated.
Check Availability →Why Drive from Marrakech to Fes
The direct route between Marrakech and Fes passes through Morocco’s southern corridor — the Atlas crossings, the gorges, and the Sahara. Done by road with overnight stops, that journey is the trip. Here is what the route actually gives you.
Cross the High Atlas and Middle Atlas
Tizi n’Tichka on Day 1 and the cedar forest near Azrou on Day 3. Two mountain crossings, two completely different landscapes on the same tour.
Walk Ait Ben Haddou
Not a drive-past. You have time to walk to the granary summit and understand why this UNESCO ksar appears in so many productions.
Real Sahara at Erg Chebbi
Merzouga is the real thing — dunes up to 150 metres. Not Agafay. Not a day trip. A proper overnight in the Sahara desert.
Sunset Camel Trek and Sunrise
Into the dunes at sunset by camel, sunrise from the same ridge the next morning. Both included in every tour version.
Door-to-Door Transport
Pick-up at your Marrakech hotel. Drop-off at your Fes riad. Your group only, no shared bus schedule, no fixed stops you cannot change.
The Ziz Valley and Cedar Forest
The drive north to Fes through the Ziz Gorge and Azrou forest is one of the best driving stretches in Morocco and is almost never mentioned.
Day-by-Day — What Actually Happens
The full 3-day private itinerary. The 4-day version adds a full exploration day at Merzouga and shifts Fes arrival to Day 4.
Pick-up from your Marrakech hotel between 7:00 and 7:30 am. The road south climbs the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. At the top the Haouz plain sits behind you and the pre-Saharan south opens ahead.
We stop at Ait Ben Haddou — the UNESCO ksar built from red-clay brick on a hillside above the Ounila River. We walk up from the river crossing to the granary at the summit, around 90 minutes on site. After Ouarzazate the road heads east through the Rose Valley. The Dades Valley is the first overnight. The gorge walls go amber at sunset.
After breakfast we drive to Todra Gorge. The walls reach 300 metres and narrow to around 10 metres at the tightest point. We walk further in than most visitors do — around 45 minutes.
The drive east crosses the Tafilalet plateau. Merzouga appears in the afternoon at the foot of Erg Chebbi, with the dune wall rising above the village. The guided camel trek begins at sunset. The guide leads the group into the dunes away from the tourist cluster. Camp is set inside the dunes: tents around a fire, Gnawa music, dinner cooked fresh, a sky that goes fully dark by 9 pm.
Up before 6 am to walk back to the dune ridge for sunrise. The sky brightens from the east, the sand changes colour in minutes. Breakfast at camp, then the drive north begins.
The road enters the Ziz Valley north of Rissani — one of the better drives in Morocco, with the road running between 200 m cliffs and date palms along the river below. Lunch stop in Midelt. North through the cedar forest around Azrou, where Barbary macaques appear near the roadside. Descent into the Saiss plain and arrival in Fes, typically between 5:00 and 6:00 pm.

Real Reviews from TripAdvisor
An worth doing adventure between Marrakech and the dunes
“Travelling to Morocco with family has been one of the best decisions we have made. The best part was the camel ride and the night at the Merzouga camp — the kids loved sliding in the sand and sleeping in the tent. Both the guides and drivers were very kind and always attentive. A safe trip with proper attention from the guides throughout.”
Hassan and Youssef
“If I had to summarize our trip in two names, it would be Hassan and Youssef. From day one they were much more than guides — close, fun, and always attentive. The experience in the Merzouga desert was something out of a movie. Hassan and Youssef made everything even more memorable. You could tell they enjoy what they do, and that gets caught.”
Everything we looked for
“From the beginning, they were professional, kind, and always quick to respond. Everything was well organised and the service exceeded expectations. Our guide Omar was absolutely wonderful — he went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. We cannot thank him enough for his kindness, professionalism, and dedication.”
