Overview

Your 3 day tour from Fes to Marrakech is the desert crossing in reverse. Instead of starting from Marrakech and driving south, you leave Fes heading south through the Middle Atlas, reach the Sahara on Day 1, and spend the next two days working your way back west through the gorges and the High Atlas before arriving in Marrakech on Day 3.

Day 1 is the longest drive on the tour: Fes through Ifrane and the cedar forest, south through Midelt and the Ziz Valley, arriving at Erg Chebbi in time for the sunset camel trek. Day 2 crosses from the desert into the gorge country, passing through Todra before arriving in the Dades Valley with the dramatic monkey finger rock formations and the famous zigzag road above the hotels. Day 3 is the High Atlas crossing: Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou, the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, and Marrakech in the late afternoon.

This Fes to Marrakech desert tour 3 days is available as a private tour for full flexibility, or as a shared daily departure for solo travellers and pairs on a budget. It can also run in the reverse direction as the 3-Day Tour from Marrakech to Fes for travellers flying the other way.

Itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1 Fes → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Midelt → Erfoud → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

Your 3 day tour from Fes to Marrakech begins with an early departure from your riad. Day 1 is the longest drive of the three, so we leave as early as possible to reach the desert in time for the sunset camel trek. The road south from Fes crosses the Saiss plateau before climbing into the Middle Atlas.

Our first stop is Ifrane, the French protectorate-era town whose tiled-roof chalets and stone lion look more like Switzerland than Morocco. It is one of the cleanest cities in Africa and the altitude keeps it cool even in summer. We stop briefly before continuing into the cedar forest above Azrou, where Barbary macaques move freely through the trees and around any stopped vehicle. These are entirely wild animals, not managed or fed. A stop of 20 to 30 minutes here is always worth it.

We continue south through Midelt, the market town between the two Atlas ranges known for its apples and its honest roadside food, where we stop for lunch. After Midelt the road enters the Ziz Valley, one of the most striking viewpoints on this entire crossing. The road climbs above the valley floor and the date palm corridor stretches south as far as you can see, flanked by old ksour and red-clay cliffs. We stop for photos before the final push through Erfoud and into Merzouga.

We arrive at the camp in the late afternoon. There is just enough time to drop bags in your tent and mount the camels before the sun gets low. The camel trek heads into the Erg Chebbi dunes at the unhurried pace the animals set, an hour out with the sky turning orange and the sand still holding the warmth of the day. Dinner at the camp under open sky, Gnawa music around the fire, and overnight in a private tent with en-suite bathroom.

Distance approx. 430 km · approx. 7 hrs driving · Night 1: Erg Chebbi desert camp · Dinner & breakfast included

Day 2 Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

There is no alarm needed. The light changes outside the tent before sunrise and most guests are up on their own. Step outside and find a comfortable spot near the camp to watch the sky above the dunes go from dark to gold. The colours above Erg Chebbi in the early morning, when the sand is still cold and the shadows are long, is one of the things people remember most from this tour. Breakfast at the camp before we load the vehicle and head west.

Our first destination is Todra Gorge, about two hours from Merzouga. The canyon at its tightest section is only 10 metres wide, with walls rising 300 metres on either side and the river running along the floor year-round. We walk the narrow section before the organised tour groups arrive. The contrast with the open desert we left this morning is hard to overstate.

After Todra we continue west toward the Dades Valley. The road through the Dades Gorge rises above the valley floor and the views here are among the most distinctive on the entire route. The rock formations above the hotels, known locally as the monkey fingers, are columns of folded stone that jut out from the canyon walls in a way that does not look entirely natural. The zigzag road above the hotel cluster, a series of tight hairpin bends cut into the gorge wall, gives a view back down the valley that is one of the better photographs on this trip. We arrive in the Dades Valley in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Distance approx. 200 km · approx. 4 hrs driving · Night 2: Dades Valley · Dinner & breakfast included

Day 3 Dades Valley → Rose Valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → High Atlas → Marrakech

After breakfast we head west along the pre-Saharan corridor. The road passes through the Rose Valley between Kelaat M’gouna and Boumaln Dades, where Damascus roses are grown for cosmetics and rose water. In April and May the roadside is planted in pink and the distilleries are running. Outside the bloom season the valley still has its terraced gardens and old kasbah walls above the river.

We arrive in Ouarzazate around midday. A brief stop at Kasbah Taourirt, the old administrative complex of the Glaoui clan at the edge of the city, takes about 30 minutes on foot. We then continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar whose earthen towers rise above the Ounila River. Recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1987, the fortified village has appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Babel. We give you a full 90 minutes to walk it from the river crossing at the base to the granary at the summit.

After Ait Ben Haddou we begin the climb into the High Atlas. The Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres is the highest paved road in Morocco and the last major feature of this crossing. The road switchbacks up through the mountain face before a long descent into the Marrakech plain. We arrive in the late afternoon and drop you at your riad or the nearest accessible point to your accommodation. Three days, two imperial cities, the Sahara, the gorges, and the mountains between them.

Distance approx. 340 km · approx. 6 hrs driving · Drop-off: Marrakech, late afternoon

Why Choose This Tour

Most travellers who do this crossing go from Marrakech to Fes. The Fes to Marrakech direction has one advantage they miss: Day 1 arrives at Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon having already covered the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley, so the desert arrival feels earned. The landscape transition across Day 1 from alpine cedar forest to open hammada to the Erg Chebbi sand mass is one of the best single-day sequences on any tour in Morocco.

The Dades Valley section on Day 2 also benefits from the direction of travel. Coming from the desert toward the mountains, the monkey finger formations and the zigzag road above the gorge are on the approach rather than the departure. You see the gorge from below and from above in the same afternoon.

Day 3 into Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas is how this crossing ends on every version of this route. The ksar in the afternoon light, then the mountain pass, then the city appearing below at the end of a three-day journey. Hassan and his team have been running this route since 2010 and know how to time each stop to get the light right.

Who This Tour Suits

Travellers flying into Fes, out of Marrakech

The most practical way to connect both airports with something real in between rather than a five-hour train ride.

Anyone who has already seen the High Atlas from Marrakech

The Fes direction starts in the Middle Atlas instead. Ifrane, the cedar forest, and the Ziz Valley are landscapes the Marrakech-direction tour never touches on Day 1.

Couples and small groups on a private tour

Full flexibility on pace at every stop. Stay longer at Todra, spend more time at the Ziz Valley viewpoint, or take the camel trek at a slower speed.

Solo travellers and pairs on a budget

Shared departures from Fes run daily year-round. Fixed price, small group, same route as the private tour.

Know Before You Go

Day 1 is the long drive

Fes to Merzouga is around 430 km and takes seven hours with stops. We leave early from your Fes riad. The cedar forest, Midelt for lunch, and the Ziz Valley viewpoint break the journey well, but it is still a full day. An early departure is not optional if you want to reach the dunes in time for the camel trek at sunset.

Fes pick-up logistics

The streets inside Fes el-Bali are too narrow for a vehicle. Your driver picks you up at the nearest accessible gate to your riad. Confirm the exact pick-up point the evening before by WhatsApp. Your riad staff will be able to direct you to the right gate if you are unsure.

Small bag for the desert camp

Your main luggage stays in the vehicle at Merzouga. You take a small bag to the camp for one night: a change of clothes, a warm layer for the desert evening, and basic toiletries. The camel carries your bag to the tent. Pack light for this section.

Desert camp temperatures

Erg Chebbi drops to around 10 degrees after midnight even in summer. The camp tents are climate-controlled year-round, but the walk between tents and the fire area is exposed. Pack a light jacket regardless of when you travel.

Ait Ben Haddou on Day 3

The ksar charges a small entry fee payable at the bridge crossing. Not included in the tour price. The site is extensive. We allow 90 minutes, which is enough to reach the granary at the summit and understand the full scale of the settlement from above.

Marrakech arrival

We drop you at your riad or the nearest accessible point. If your riad is inside the medina, have the address written in Arabic. Marrakech is easier to navigate than Fes, but the medina alleyways are not well-served by GPS in the final stretch. Your riad can meet you at a nearby landmark if needed.

Reviews

★★★★★

“The direction from Fes made Day 1 feel completely different from anything I had heard about this route. The cedar forest in the morning, the Ziz Valley in the afternoon, and then the Erg Chebbi dunes appearing on the horizon an hour before we arrived. The camel trek that evening was the payoff for an excellent day of driving.”

★★★★★

“The monkey finger formations in the Dades Valley on Day 2 were something I had not read about before the tour. Our driver stopped at the viewpoint on the zigzag road and the whole valley opened up below us. The camp on Night 1 had a private bathroom with actual hot water in the Sahara. Both of those things surprised me.”

★★★★★

“We woke up naturally just before sunrise and sat near the tent watching the sky above the dunes change. No one told us to do it. It just happened. That was the best twenty minutes of the whole trip. Ait Ben Haddou on Day 3 in the late afternoon light was the right ending.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Anything not covered here, WhatsApp us and we reply same day.

What does the 3 day tour from Fes to Marrakech include?
Pick-up from your Fes riad or nearest accessible gate, a private air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide for all three days, two nights accommodation with dinner and breakfast at both properties, a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, sandboarding at the desert camp, and drop-off at your Marrakech riad or nearest accessible point. All fuel and road tolls included. Lunches, entry fees, and Marrakech accommodation are not included.
Can this tour run in the opposite direction from Marrakech to Fes?
Yes. The same route runs in reverse as the 3-Day Tour from Marrakech to Fes, picking you up in Marrakech and dropping you in Fes three days later. Tell us which direction works for your flights when you enquire.
Does the desert camp have private bathrooms?
Yes. All three tiers include private tents with en-suite bathrooms and hot water. You do not share facilities with other guests. The tents are air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter.
Why is Day 1 so long?
Fes to Merzouga is around 430 km. There is no shorter route that still includes Ifrane, the cedar forest, and the Ziz Valley. The stops break the drive into natural segments and the landscape changes significantly across the day. We leave early from Fes to have enough time at each stop and still reach the camp before the sunset camel trek. Most travellers find the variety of scenery makes the day pass quickly.
What are the monkey fingers in the Dades Valley?
The monkey fingers are rock formations in the upper Dades Gorge, above the hotel cluster, where layers of folded limestone jut out from the canyon wall in columns that resemble a hand from below. The zigzag road above the hotels gives the best view of these formations and of the valley below. We stop here on Day 2 on the way into the gorge from Todra.
How far in advance should I book?
Two weeks for spring and autumn travel. The mid-range and premium desert camp tiers book out fastest during peak season. Outside March to May and September to November, a few days notice is usually sufficient.

Want more time in the south?

If you have four days, ask us about the 4-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour, which adds an Ouarzazate overnight and gives the Rose Valley and the pre-Saharan kasbah corridor a proper afternoon instead of a drive-through.

Flying into Marrakech instead?

The 3-Day Tour from Marrakech to Fes covers the same route in the opposite direction, starting in Marrakech and ending in Fes three days later.
