The direct answer
Marrakech to Merzouga: Distance and Drive Time
The distance from Marrakech to Merzouga by road is approximately 560 km via the most direct route — over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, through Ouarzazate, and south-east through the Draa-Tafilalet region to the dunes.
Driving this without stopping takes around 8 hours in good conditions. With a lunch break and a fuel stop, expect 9 to 10 hours. Nobody who has driven this route recommends doing it in one day — not because it is impossible, but because you drive straight past some of the most remarkable scenery in Morocco without seeing any of it.
The route most people actually take
The overwhelming majority of travellers do Marrakech to Merzouga over two days: Day 1 ending in the Dades Valley (around 310 km, 6 hours including a stop at Ait Ben Haddou), Day 2 continuing to Merzouga via Todra Gorge (around 200 km, 4 to 5 hours). This is the itinerary used on every Pro Morocco Tours desert tour — it is the correct way to make this journey.

Marrakech to Merzouga Route: Every Section Explained
Marrakech
Departure point. Pick-up from your riad or hotel. The city gives way to the southern suburbs within minutes — the landscape changes fast once you are on the N9 heading south-east.
Start
Tizi n’Tichka Pass — 2,260m
The highest paved road in Morocco. The climb through the High Atlas takes around 1 hour 30 minutes from Marrakech. Views from the pass stretch in both directions on clear days. Road quality is good but the switchbacks are numerous — take it at a sensible pace.
~1h 30m
Ait Ben Haddou
Around 20 minutes after the pass. The UNESCO ksar on the Ounila River is worth at least 90 minutes. Cross the river on foot, walk up through the citadel layers to the top granary. Many films have been shot here — Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy. Allow 90 minutes minimum.
~2h 30m
Ouarzazate
Around 30 minutes from Ait Ben Haddou. A genuine city with good restaurants and fuel. The Taourirt Kasbah is worth a stop if you have time. Atlas Studios — one of the largest film studios in the world — is just outside the city. Most desert tours pass through rather than stop.
~3h 30m
Dades Valley — Overnight Stop
Around 2 hours east of Ouarzazate. The Route of a Thousand Kasbahs runs through this valley — red clay fortresses against the canyon walls. Boumalne Dades and the gorge above it is where most tours overnight. This is the recommended stop for Day 1.
~6h total
Todra Gorge
Around 1 hour east of the Dades Valley. The narrowest section of the gorge — 300-metre walls pressing to within 10 metres — is one of the most dramatic natural features in Morocco. Allow 45 minutes to walk through properly. Continue south-east from here toward Merzouga.
~7h total
Merzouga — Erg Chebbi
Around 3 hours south-east of Todra Gorge across the Draa-Tafilalet plain. The road is straight and flat for the final stretch — the dunes appear on the horizon long before you reach them. Arrive late afternoon for the sunset camel trek.

Where to stop along the way
The Best Stops Between Marrakech and Merzouga
Tizi n’Tichka Pass
1 hour 30 minutes from Marrakech — 15 to 20 min stop
The viewpoint at the top of the pass is worth a short stop for the panorama. Argan oil cooperatives line the road on the way down — authentic ones have a certificate on the door.
Ait Ben Haddou
2 hours 30 minutes from Marrakech — 90 min stop
Do not rush this. The ksar takes at least an hour to walk properly. The views from the top granary are worth the climb. Arrive before 10am to beat day-trip crowds from Ouarzazate.
Ouarzazate
3 hours 30 minutes from Marrakech — 30 to 60 min stop
Good place for lunch. The Taourirt Kasbah at the east end of town is a quick and worthwhile stop. Atlas Studios for film buffs — but book ahead as access is ticketed.
Dades Valley and Gorge
6 hours from Marrakech — overnight recommended
The gorge above Boumalne Dades is one of the most photographed road sections in Morocco — tight hairpin bends between red-rock walls. Worth the short detour from the main road.
Todra Gorge
7 hours from Marrakech — 45 min stop
The narrowest canyon section is a 15-minute walk from the car park. The walls press to within 10 metres of each other at the tightest point. The river is cold and runs through the middle.
Rissani
9 hours from Marrakech — 20 to 30 min stop
The historic caravan town at the edge of the Tafilalet oasis. The Monday, Thursday, and Sunday market is one of the most authentic in the region. 35 km from Merzouga.

How to Get from Marrakech to Merzouga
Most popular
Private Desert Tour
A private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide for 3 or 4 days. Pick-up from your Marrakech accommodation. Covers Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, and the desert. Drop-off in Marrakech, Fes, or Casablanca. The most flexible and rewarding option.
Budget option
Shared Group Tour
Same route, same stops, same camps — shared with a small group in a minibus. Lower cost than a private tour. Less flexibility in timing and stops. Departs on fixed dates. Good for solo travellers or those wanting to meet other people on the road.
Independent travel
Self-Drive or Bus
Possible but not straightforward. The road is good but long and the turns easy to miss. Public buses connect Marrakech to Ouarzazate and Tinghir, with transfers needed for the final stretch to Merzouga. CTM buses are reliable; the journey takes 12 to 14 hours total with connections.
Why Most People Choose a Tour Rather Than Driving Independently
The road from Marrakech to Merzouga is entirely paved and in good condition. It is not technically difficult to drive. The reason most people opt for a guided tour rather than renting a car is the combination of factors: navigating the Atlas passes without local knowledge, the long driving days, finding accommodation along the route, knowing which stops are worth the time, and arriving at the desert camp with enough energy to actually enjoy the sunset trek.
A driver-guide who has made this journey hundreds of times also provides something a GPS cannot: context. The kasbah you pass that looks unremarkable from the road has a story. The oasis town that is not in any guidebook is worth stopping in. The best viewpoint on the Tizi n’Tichka descent is 200 metres off the road. That kind of knowledge changes the experience significantly.
What about the return journey?
Most Marrakech to Merzouga desert tours return via a different route — south through Rissani, west through Alnif and the volcanic Anti-Atlas, north through N’Kob and the Draa Valley palm corridor to Ouarzazate, then back over the High Atlas to Marrakech. This avoids repeating the outward route and adds around 200 km but covers terrain that no standard Marrakech round-trip would otherwise reach.
