Overview

Your 5 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the unhurried version of the southern crossing. Five days means the first overnight falls in Ouarzazate rather than pushing straight to the Dades Valley. It means Skoura and the Rose Valley have proper time on Day 2. It means the Dades Valley gorge gets explored before dinner rather than after a nine-hour drive. And it means two nights near Erg Chebbi, with the camp night for the camel trek and a full Day 4 for everything the wider Merzouga area has to offer.

Day 5 is the Draa Valley return, Morocco’s longest palm oasis corridor, winding west through kasbah towns and date palm settlements back to Ouarzazate and the High Atlas. The drive back into Marrakech from the south, with the city appearing below the mountains at the end of a five-day journey, is the right way to close a tour of this length.

This 5 day Marrakech Merzouga desert tour is available as a private departure for groups wanting full flexibility, or as a shared daily tour at a fixed per-person rate.

Itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1 Marrakech → High Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate

Your 5 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with a morning departure south through the High Atlas. The Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres is the first major landmark, a mountain road that climbs through successive layers of rock to a summit with wide views in both directions before the descent toward the pre-Saharan south.

We arrive at Ait Ben Haddou with the morning still ahead. The fortified ksar sits on a hillside above the Ounila River, its earthen towers and collective kasbahs rising in tiers from the water’s edge to the granary at the summit. We give you a full 90 minutes here. Walk it from bottom to top, read the plaques, and make use of the fact that the UNESCO listing means the site is maintained in a way that the equivalent in the 1970s was not. The films shot here include Gladiator, Babel, and Game of Thrones.

We continue to Ouarzazate and check in to the hotel with the afternoon free. Kasbah Taourirt is the old administrative centre of the Glaoui clan and worth a visit on foot. The Atlas Film Studios are a short drive if you want to see the actual sets. Dinner and overnight in Ouarzazate. The next four days will cover a lot of ground. This first night is deliberately calm.

Distance approx. 210 km · Night 1: Ouarzazate · Dinner & breakfast included

Day 2 Ouarzazate → Skoura → Rose Valley → Dades Valley

After breakfast we head east on the pre-Saharan corridor, the road that runs below the High Atlas through a sequence of palm oases, kasbah towns, and cultivated valleys that most Morocco tours see only from the vehicle window. Today we stop in most of them.

The Skoura oasis is the first major stop. Kasbah Amridil, one of the most photographed kasbahs in Morocco, stands at the edge of the palm grove and is accessible by foot through the irrigation channels. The walk through the palms to reach it, with the ditch system still in operation around you, is one of the more quietly impressive things on this route.

The Rose Valley between Kelaat M’gouna and Boumaln Dades is next. The Damascus roses grown here are harvested for cosmetics and rose water, and in April and May the roadside is planted in pink. Outside the bloom season the valley is still worth the drive for the terraced gardens, the kasbah walls above the river, and the cooperative distilleries that are open year-round.

We arrive in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. There is time before dinner to walk up into the gorge while the light is still good, following the river into the canyon where the walls close in and the geology shifts from the desert colours below to layered limestone above. Dinner and overnight.

Distance approx. 130 km · Night 2: Dades Valley · Dinner & breakfast included

Day 3 Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Desert

Before breakfast we walk the upper gorge section, where the rock formations above the hotel level narrow the canyon and the early light catches the stone faces at angles that disappear by midday. These formations, known locally as the monkey fingers, are a geological feature specific to this upper section of the Dades and not visible from the road below. We are back for breakfast before the vehicle is loaded.

Todra Gorge is an hour east, a narrower and more vertical canyon than the Dades. We walk the floor of the tightest section, where the walls are 300 metres high and the river still runs between them year-round. The gorge is popular with technical climbers and the routes up the walls are visible from the path. We walk as far as the canyon allows and return before the midday groups arrive.

From Tinghir the road flattens and the desert asserts itself by degrees. By the time we pass Erfoud and Rissani the landscape is open hammada. Erg Chebbi appears on the southern horizon in the early afternoon. We arrive at the camp with time to settle in before the camel trek begins. The sunset ride into the dunes, an hour out and an hour back at the pace the camels set, is the moment this tour has been building toward since Day 1. Dinner at the camp. Music around the fire. Overhead, the sky above Erg Chebbi is the darkest you will see in Morocco.

Distance approx. 200 km · Night 3: Erg Chebbi desert camp · Dinner & breakfast included

Day 4 Merzouga Full Exploration Day

You can climb the dune behind the camp before the sun is up. The Erg Chebbi dunes from above in the early morning, when the shadows are still hard and the sand is cold from the night, is the image that holds longest after you leave Morocco. Breakfast at the camp, then we transfer to the Merzouga hotel for a shower and a base for the day.

The 4×4 exploration starts mid-morning. We drive east toward the Algerian border country before turning toward Khamlia. This village, settled by the descendants of West African communities who arrived here along the trans-Saharan trade routes, plays Gnawa music as a living tradition. We arrange a private session in a family compound, a lower-register instrument and metallic percussion played by people for whom this is daily practice rather than a visitor attraction.

A nomad family visit follows, in an encampment beyond the paved roads east of Merzouga. The conversation over mint tea is real: what the seasonal migration involves now, what it looked like a generation ago, and which parts of it have changed and which have not. From the encampment we drive to the M’ifis salt flats and, if the season is right, the shallow lake where flamingos from the Atlas wetlands come to feed. We return to the hotel by mid-afternoon. The pool, a decent dinner, and a proper bed before the long drive tomorrow.

Full 4×4 exploration day · Night 4: Merzouga hotel · Dinner & breakfast included

Day 5 Merzouga → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakech

After breakfast we take the Draa Valley road west, a route that runs through the south of Morocco in a direction the outward journey never approached. The Draa is Morocco’s longest river, and the oasis corridor it creates below the Anti-Atlas runs for over 200 km through kasbah towns, fortified granaries, and date palm settlements that have been in continuous occupation for centuries.

We pass through Tamegroute, where a 17th-century religious library still holds manuscripts that predate the Moroccan nation, and continue through Zagora and Agdz before climbing north toward Ouarzazate. The valley is quieter than the main tourist route and the villages along the river are less accustomed to passing vehicles. We stop where the architecture or the light is interesting.

From Ouarzazate we rejoin the Atlas highway and begin the climb back over the Tizi n’Tichka. The mountain pass on the return, coming from the south with five days of desert and valley behind you, feels different from Day 1. We descend into Marrakech in the early evening and drop you at your riad. Your first visit or your tenth, the city after five days in the south is still a jolt.

Distance approx. 560 km · Drop-off: Marrakech, early evening

Why Choose This Tour

Five days is the point at which the southern Morocco crossing stops feeling like a series of checkpoints and starts feeling like a journey. The Ouarzazate overnight on Night 1 means Day 2 begins from rest rather than from a long drive. The Skoura and Rose Valley section on Day 2 gets the afternoon it deserves. The Dades Valley gorge gets a proper evening walk. The Todra Gorge on Day 3 is reached without rushing.

The two nights near Erg Chebbi are the structural centre of this tour. The camp night delivers the camel trek and the Sahara sky. The hotel night delivers the exploration day. Both experiences are different and both are necessary if you want to understand the Merzouga area beyond its most photographed surface.

The Tamegroute library stop on the Draa Valley return is a detail specific to this tour. A 17th-century manuscript collection, still working as a religious library, still holding documents that predate the country around it. It takes twenty minutes and it is the kind of detail that stays with you longer than most of the more obvious sights.

Who This Tour Suits

Travellers with five days in Marrakech

A round trip from Marrakech that covers the south properly without any of it feeling rushed. One flight, one base.

Photographers and outdoor travellers

Two mornings at Erg Chebbi, the Todra Gorge walls, the Dades rock formations at dawn. The five-day version gives you time at each of these rather than a drive-by.

Anyone who wants to go beyond the camel trek

Day 4 is the part of the Sahara most visitors never reach. Khamlia, the nomad encampments, the salt flats. The 4×4 day is what makes this a Merzouga tour rather than a desert camp tour.

Couples wanting a private experience

Every stop on the private tour is exclusive to your group. The nomad visit, the Khamlia session, the salt flats. None of it is shared with other travellers.

Know Before You Go

Day 5 is the long return

The Draa Valley route from Merzouga to Marrakech covers around 560 km. We leave after breakfast and the valley provides natural stopping points at Tamegroute, Zagora, and Agdz. Even so it is a long day. We aim to have you back in Marrakech before dark.

Tamegroute manuscript library

The library is a functioning religious institution. Entry is by request and a small donation is appropriate. Dress modestly. The manuscripts themselves are not always on display but the building and the context are worth the stop regardless.

Small overnight bag for the camp

Your main luggage stays in the vehicle at Merzouga. Take a small bag to the camp: one change of clothes, a warm layer for the desert night, and basic toiletries. The camp transfers your bag by camel to your tent.

Rose Valley bloom season

April and May are the weeks when the valley shows its full character. The roses are in flower, the distilleries are running, and the roadside between Kelaat M’gouna and Boumaln is planted in pink. Outside this window the valley remains worth the detour for its architecture and the river corridor.

Best season

October through April for the most comfortable conditions. Summer at Erg Chebbi can exceed 40 degrees, which makes the Day 4 outdoor exploration harder and the camel trek on Day 3 uncomfortable in the late afternoon heat.

Skoura Kasbah Amridil access

The walk through the Skoura palm grove to reach Kasbah Amridil takes around 20 minutes each way on a footpath through the irrigation channels. Wear shoes that can handle uneven ground. The interior of the kasbah charges a small entry fee payable on arrival.

Reviews

★★★★★

“Five days was the right length. Ouarzazate on Night 1 meant we woke up already in the south and Day 2 through the Rose Valley and Skoura had no time pressure at all. The Tamegroute library on Day 5 was a complete surprise. A 17th-century manuscript collection still in use as a library. Our driver knew to stop there without us asking.”

★★★★★

“The Khamlia session on Day 4 was the best thing we did in Morocco. Not a tourist performance. The family played because it is what they do. After the camp night and the camel trek the day before, Day 4 felt like we had actually arrived somewhere rather than passing through.”

★★★★★

“The Dades Valley gorge walk before dinner on Day 2 was a decision we nearly skipped because we were tired. Do not skip it. The canyon in the late afternoon light is extraordinary and by the time you walk back the hotel dinner is ready. Day 3 in the Todra Gorge before anyone else arrived was the same. Hassan’s team knows exactly when to go and where.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Anything not covered, WhatsApp us and we reply same day.

What does the 5 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga include?
Pick-up and drop-off at your Marrakech accommodation, a private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide for all five days, four nights accommodation with dinner and breakfast at all properties, a sunset camel trek, sandboarding, a full 4×4 Merzouga exploration day covering Khamlia, nomad family visit, M’ifis salt flats, and seasonal lake. All fuel and road tolls included.
Why does this tour overnight in Ouarzazate on Night 1?
The Ouarzazate overnight means Day 2 can cover the Rose Valley and Skoura properly rather than rushing straight to the Dades Valley. It also means Ait Ben Haddou on Day 1 is a destination with time rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else. The extra night in the south changes the pace of the whole tour.
Why does Night 3 move to a Merzouga hotel rather than staying at the camp?
The full Day 4 exploration requires an early start and a comfortable base. The hotel has a pool and proper facilities that the camp does not. The desert camp experience is complete on Night 3 with the camel trek, the dinner, and the sky. Night 4 is about recovery and preparation for the long Day 5 return.
Is the Draa Valley return the same road as the outward journey?
No. The outward journey goes north of the High Atlas via the Tichka Pass, then east through the pre-Saharan corridor. The return follows the Draa Valley southwest of the Sahara through a completely different landscape: palm oasis, kasbah towns, and the old caravan route through southern Morocco. The two roads share only the final section up to the Tichka Pass and into Marrakech.
How far in advance should I book?
Two to three weeks for spring and autumn travel. The Ouarzazate premium tier (Oz Palace) and the Erg Chebbi premium camp book out earliest. Outside peak season, a week’s notice is usually sufficient.

Flying out of Fes?

The 5-Day Tour from Marrakech to Fes covers similar southern ground but includes an Ouarzazate overnight and a Skoura nomad family visit before heading to Merzouga, then continues north to drop you in Fes rather than returning to Marrakech.

Want fewer days?

The 4-Day Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga covers the same desert exploration day and Draa Valley return, but without the Ouarzazate overnight, moving at a faster pace through the south.
