The Best 3-Day Marrakech To Merzouga Desert
Tour Overview
The 3-Day Marrakech Desert Round Trip via Alnif and the Draa Valley is a complete southern loop from Marrakech, taking a different road in each direction so that not a single kilometre is repeated. Day 1 heads south-east over the High Atlas, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley. Day 2 crosses Todra Gorge to reach the Saharan dunes of Erg Chebbi for a sunset camel trek and overnight in the desert. Day 3 returns to Marrakech on the southern route through Rissani, Alnif, the Anti-Atlas village of N'Kob, and the Draa Valley palm corridor through Agdz and Ouarzazate before the final climb over Tizi n'Tichka.
Day 3 is a long day of driving, approximately 560 km, and requires an early departure from the desert camp. The landscapes it passes through, from the volcanic Anti-Atlas to the palms of the Draa Valley, are among the most beautiful in Morocco and are not seen on any other round-trip route from Marrakech. If you have more time, the 4-day version of this tour is a more comfortable way to cover the same ground.
Pick-up and drop-off from your Marrakech riad or hotel. Ideal for travellers whose flights both use Marrakech Menara Airport and who want to see the most complete southern circuit the Sahara has to offer in three days.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech ⇒ Ait Ben Haddou ⇒ Dades Valley
Your driver collects you from your Marrakech riad or hotel early in the morning. The drive heads south-east on the N9, climbing into the High Atlas as the city gives way to cedar scrub, Berber villages, and the switchbacks of the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres. This is the highest paved road in Morocco, and on a clear day the views north and south are extraordinary.
The first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, reached by crossing the Ounila River on foot. The ksar rises in layers of tawny red earth above the riverbank, its towers and granaries forming one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Morocco. Walk up through the successive levels to the top granary for views over the valley and the semi-desert beyond. Allow at least 90 minutes here.
After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues east through Ouarzazate and along the Dades Valley corridor. Ancient kasbah towers and ksar walls in red earth rise against the canyon cliffs on both sides. You arrive at your Dades Valley accommodation in time for a walk along the gorge and dinner on a terrace overlooking the canyon. Overnight in the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley ⇒ Todra Gorge ⇒ Merzouga Desert
Breakfast on the terrace with the canyon walls catching the early light, then a short walk into the Dades Gorge before departure. The gorge road climbs tight hairpin bends between red-rock canyon walls before the plain opens out heading east towards Tinghir.
Todra Gorge is the first significant stop, approximately one hour from the Dades Valley. The gorge is a narrow canyon cut by the Todra River through the eastern High Atlas, with sheer limestone walls rising around 300 metres on either side. In the narrowest section the walls press to within 10 metres of each other and the river runs cold between them. Allow at least 45 minutes for a proper walk into the canyon.
From Tinghir the road continues south-east through the Draa-Tafilalet region, the landscape becoming more arid as the mountains recede. You arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, in time to mount your camel for the trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Erg Chebbi rises to 150 metres at its highest point, and moving through the dunes on camelback as the sky shifts through orange and deep red and violet is one of those things that no photograph adequately captures. Dinner at the desert camp is followed by Gnawa music around the fire and, on clear nights, a Milky Way that simply cannot be seen from anywhere near a city. Overnight in the desert camp at Erg Chebbi.
Day 3: Merzouga ⇒ Rissani ⇒ Alnif ⇒ N'Kob ⇒ Draa Valley ⇒ Agdz ⇒ Ouarzazate ⇒ Marrakech
A very early start is essential on Day 3. Wake before dawn to catch the desert sunrise from the dunes, then breakfast at camp and on the road by 6.30am at the latest. The return to Marrakech via the southern route covers approximately 560 kilometres and takes between nine and ten hours including stops, arriving in Marrakech in the early evening.
The first stop is Rissani, 35 kilometres from Merzouga. This small desert town was the caravan capital of the Tafilalet for centuries and the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, which has ruled Morocco since the 17th century. The ruins of Sijilmassa and the old medina are a brief but telling window into how important this remote corner of Morocco once was to the wider world.
From Rissani the road heads west towards Alnif through landscapes of volcanic black rock and pale hammada entirely different from the red dunes of Erg Chebbi. Alnif sits in fossil country at the foot of the Jbel Saghro, the dramatic dark Anti-Atlas range. The town is known for its trilobite and orthoceras fossils, and a brief stop at the roadside stalls is worthwhile. Continuing west through Tazzarine, the road reaches N'Kob, the village of 45 kasbahs. Ksar towers and fortified granaries dot the hillsides above the village in extraordinary density, and the views over the Anti-Atlas from here are outstanding.
From N'Kob the road descends north to Agdz, where the Draa Valley begins in earnest. Morocco's longest valley unfolds ahead: a continuous corridor of date palms, rose-coloured kasbahs, and mud-brick villages lining the ancient caravan road that once connected Marrakech to Timbuktu. The quality of the afternoon light in the Draa Valley is exceptional, and the long drive through it is one of the finest stretches of road in the country. The valley corridor leads north to Ouarzazate, where the road west climbs back over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass. Arriving in Marrakech in the early evening, your driver drops you at your riad or at Marrakech Menara Airport.

Why Choose This Tour
Most round trips from Marrakech to the Sahara return the same way they came: over Tizi n'Tichka, through Ouarzazate, and back. This tour does not. The outward journey takes the northern approach via the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. The return takes the southern road through Rissani, the Anti-Atlas, N'Kob, and the full length of the Draa Valley. Three days, two nights, zero roads repeated.
The Day 3 return via Alnif and the Draa Valley passes through terrain that no standard round-trip itinerary ever reaches. The volcanic landscapes of the Jbel Saghro, the density of kasbahs at N'Kob, and the extraordinary palm corridor of the Draa Valley are not accessible on the northern return route.
This is the most complete 3-day Marrakech desert circuit available. For a more relaxed pace, the 4-day version adds an overnight in Ouarzazate and removes the long Day 3 drive entirely.
Who Is This Tour For
A complete round trip with both airports the same and no road repeated. The most varied southern Morocco circuit available in three days.
Three days is the minimum to do the Sahara properly and return via the Draa Valley. If you can add a fourth day, do it. If three is all you have, this is the route.
High Atlas, Dades, Todra, Erg Chebbi, Anti-Atlas, Draa Valley, and Tizi n'Tichka on the way home. Six entirely different landscapes in three days.
Day 3 is a long, early day. Guests who embrace the journey as part of the experience rather than something to get through will find it one of the most rewarding drives in Morocco.
Know Before You Go
The return from Merzouga to Marrakech via Alnif and the Draa Valley covers approximately 560 km and takes nine to ten hours including stops. Departure from the desert camp must be by 6.30am. This is non-negotiable if you want to arrive in Marrakech before dark. The scenery throughout the day is exceptional and the stops at Rissani, Alnif, and N'Kob break the drive naturally.
October to April is the most comfortable window. Erg Chebbi regularly exceeds 40°C in July and August. The Draa Valley and Anti-Atlas roads are well-shaded and pleasant year-round. The Tizi n'Tichka can have snow from December to February but remains open in normal conditions.
The return road via Alnif, Tazzarine, N'Kob, Agdz, and Ouarzazate is fully paved and in good condition. It passes through the Anti-Atlas mountains and the volcanic Jbel Saghro range before descending into the Draa Valley. It is a slower, more rural road than the main N10, and the driving time reflects this. The scenery is the point.
Day 3 arrives in Marrakech between 6pm and 8pm depending on stops and departure time from camp. This timing works well for evening flights or for staying a further night in Marrakech. If your flight departs the morning of Day 4 rather than Day 3 evening, the timing is comfortable. Morning Day 3 flights are not realistic on this route.
The 4-Day Marrakech Desert Tour via the Draa Valley covers exactly the same route with an overnight in Ouarzazate inserted between the Draa Valley and the return to Marrakech. Day 3 becomes a comfortable 380 km drive ending in Ouarzazate, and Day 4 is a relaxed 205 km morning return. If you can spare the extra night, it is a significantly better experience.
Cash in Moroccan dirhams is essential throughout. ATMs are available in Ouarzazate and Tinghir on the outward journey but are scarce between Merzouga and Ouarzazate on the return. Carry sufficient cash from the start of Day 2 to cover camps, guesthouses, and any stops along the Alnif and Draa Valley route.

What Our Guests Say
"The Day 3 drive was long and I will not pretend otherwise. But the Draa Valley in the afternoon light was unlike anything I had ever seen. We left the camp at 6am, arrived in Marrakech at 7pm, and I would do it again without hesitation."
"We came to Morocco for three days specifically for the desert. The fact that the return route was completely different from the outward journey made it feel like two trips in one. N'Kob was the most beautiful village we stopped in."
"Three days and not one road repeated. Ait Ben Haddou on Day 1, the dunes on Day 2, and then the Anti-Atlas and the Draa Valley on Day 3. I went home with six completely different landscapes in my head. The driver knew every stop perfectly."
