4-Day Student Morocco Trip Overview

This trip is designed specifically for students and young travellers who want to see Morocco properly over a long weekend without paying for it for the next three months. It runs every Thursday to Sunday, departing from and returning to Marrakech, which makes it easy to combine with a few days exploring the city on either side.

Day 1 is Marrakech, the medina, the souks, and the famous Jemaa el-Fna square at night. Day 2 heads south over the High Atlas to the UNESCO ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, through Ouarzazate, and on to the canyon town of Tinghir. Day 3 walks Todra Gorge in the morning and reaches the Sahara at Erg Chebbi in the afternoon. Day 4 returns through Ouarzazate and back over the High Atlas to Marrakech on Sunday evening.

Everything that matters in southern Morocco, covered in four days at a price built for students.

Trip Highlights

  • ✓  Jemaa el-Fna on Thursday night: food stalls, musicians, storytellers, and the whole city out at once
  • ✓  Tizi n'Tichka Pass crossing at 2,260 metres, the highest paved road in Morocco
  • ✓  Ait Ben Haddou UNESCO ksar, filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia
  • ✓  Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, and the Atlas Film Studios
  • ✓  Walk through Todra Gorge, where 300 metre rock walls close in around you
  • ✓  Sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara
  • ✓  Overnight Berber desert camp: fire, Gnawa music, and a sky full of stars
  • ✓  Optional quad ATV and dune buggy on Day 3 at Erg Chebbi

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 (Thursday) ⇢ Arrive in Marrakech

Arrive in Marrakech and check into your accommodation. The afternoon is free to find your feet in the medina, get something to eat, and get a sense of the city before the group meets in the evening.

The group gathers for a walk through the souks and into the Jemaa el-Fna square. Thursday night on the square is worth the trip on its own: food stalls, snake charmers, acrobats, musicians, and what feels like the entire population of Marrakech in one open space. Dinner on the square from the food stalls.

Early to bed. The van leaves at 7:30am tomorrow.

Arrival day  ·  Free afternoon  ·  Group meeting point at 19:00  ·  Night 1 Marrakech

Day 2 (Friday) ⇢ Marrakech ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Tinghir

Early departure at 7:30am. The van heads south out of Marrakech and begins climbing into the High Atlas. The Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres is a road that earns a photo stop. The descent on the other side brings you into a completely different Morocco: drier, redder, and further from everything.

First stop is Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO ksar that you will recognise from Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and about a dozen other productions. The climb up through the earthen citadel to the granary at the top takes around thirty minutes and the view across the valley is worth every step.

Lunch in Ouarzazate, the so-called Hollywood of Africa. If time allows, a quick stop at the Atlas Film Studios, the largest film studios in the world by surface area and still regularly in use.

The drive east continues through the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, past ancient mud-brick towers and rose-growing villages, arriving in Tinghir in the evening. Overnight in Tinghir.

Depart 7:30am  ·  Driving distance: approximately 320 km  ·  Night 2 Tinghir

Day 3 (Saturday) ⇢ Tinghir ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Merzouga Desert

Morning walk through Todra Gorge, just ten minutes from Tinghir. The limestone walls close in to a canyon only a few metres wide in places, with 300 metres of rock rising on either side. It is one of the most genuinely dramatic natural sights in Morocco and it is free. Allow thirty to forty-five minutes to walk in and back.

From Tinghir, the route heads southeast across the pre-Saharan plateau to Merzouga. The landscape empties out over the course of a couple of hours: the mountains recede, the vegetation thins to almost nothing, and then the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune field appears on the horizon.

Arrive in the afternoon. Optional quad ATV or dune buggy session before the camel trek (see Add-Ons below). At sunset, the group mounts camels and rides into the dunes. The Erg Chebbi is one of the great dune fields of North Africa, reaching over 150 metres at its highest point. Dinner around the fire at the Berber desert camp. Gnawa music in the evening. Overnight in the desert camp.

Driving distance: approximately 215 km from Tinghir  ·  Sunset camel trek included  ·  Night 3 Berber desert camp

Day 4 (Sunday) ⇢ Merzouga ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Marrakech

Optional early alarm to catch sunrise from the dunes. No pressure. Breakfast at camp, then departure back west. The return crosses the Draa-Tafilalet region through Ouarzazate and back over the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka.

Arrive back in Marrakech on Sunday evening. Drop-off at the original meeting point or your accommodation. Tour ends here.

Driving distance: approximately 550 km  ·  Arrive Marrakech Sunday evening  ·  Drop-off at accommodation

Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly does the trip start and end?
The trip runs Thursday to Sunday every week. Day 1 is Thursday: you arrive in Marrakech and the group meets at 19:00 for the evening walk. Day 2 departs at 07:30. The tour ends with drop-off in Marrakech on Sunday evening. It is designed to fit a university long weekend or any Thursday-Sunday break.
Do I need to book my own accommodation in Marrakech on Day 1?
Night 1 in Marrakech is included in the trip. You do not need to arrange separate accommodation. If you plan to arrive a day or two early to explore Marrakech independently, the team can recommend where to stay and connect you to the group on Thursday evening.
How many people are typically on each trip?
Groups typically run between 6 and 16 people. You will be travelling with other students from various universities and countries. The shared format is part of what makes this trip work: the desert camp, the dune rides, and the evenings around the fire are genuinely better with a group.
Can I book as a private group?
Yes. If you have a group of 4 or more, you can book the trip as a private departure on any Thursday with no other travellers in the vehicle. Private groups also receive a better price. Contact us with your group size and preferred dates and we will send a quote within a few hours.
Do I need to book the quad ATV or dune buggy in advance?
You can book in advance when booking the trip, or arrange it on the day at Merzouga. Booking in advance guarantees availability, which matters if you are travelling in a large group. Prices are fixed at 50 EUR per quad per hour (single), 80 EUR per hour (double), or 120 EUR per hour for the dune buggy (double).
What should I pack?
The desert is hot during the day and cold at night, especially in winter. Layers are essential. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for the dunes. Closed shoes are better than sandals for the camel trek and the gorge walk. A light scarf is useful in the desert and respectful in the medina. Everything fits in a small daypack or backpack.
