The Best 4-Day Marrakech Desert Tour Round Trip.
Tour Overview
The 4-Day Marrakech Desert Tour via the Draa Valley is a complete loop from Marrakech through the most varied terrain in southern Morocco. The outward route crosses the High Atlas>Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, and Todra Gorge to reach the Saharan dunes of Erg Chebbi by Day 2. Day 3 is devoted entirely to the Merzouga area: nomadic family visits near M'fis, community gardens, and the seasonal lake at Dayet Srij. The return on Day 4 takes an entirely different road south, looping back through Rissani, Alnif, the Anti-Atlas villages of Tazzarine and N'Kob, and then north along the Draa Valley through Agdz and Ouarzazate before crossing the High Atlas back to Marrakech.
Not a single road on this tour is repeated. The outward and return journeys are entirely different routes through entirely different landscapes, which is what makes the loop format genuinely worthwhile rather than simply doubling back the way you came.
Pick-up and drop-off is from your Marrakech riad or hotel. The tour is ideal for travellers whose flights both use Marrakech Menara Airport and who want to see the full sweep of Morocco's southern interior in four days.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech ⇒ Ait Ben Haddou ⇒ Dades Valley
Your driver collects you from your Marrakech riad or hotel early in the morning. The first section of the drive heads south-east on the N9, climbing into the High Atlas as the city gives way to cedar scrub, Berber villages, and the dramatic switchbacks of the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres. This is the highest paved road in Morocco, and on a clear day the views north and south over the mountain ranges are extraordinary.
The first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, reached by crossing the Ounila River on foot. The ksar rises in layers of tawny red earth above the riverbank, its towers and granaries forming one of the most recognisable silhouettes in all of Morocco. Walk up through the successive levels to the top granary for the views over the valley and the semi-desert beyond. This is one of the most filmed locations on earth, having served as a backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy. Allow at least 90 minutes here.
After Ait Ben Haddou the road continues east through Ouarzazate, passing the Atlas Studios, and follows the Dades Valley corridor. Ancient kasbah towers and ksar walls in tawny red earth rise against the canyon cliffs on both sides. You arrive at your Dades Valley accommodation in time for a walk along the gorge and dinner on a terrace overlooking the canyon. Overnight in the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley ⇒ Todra Gorge ⇒ Merzouga Desert
Breakfast on a terrace with the canyon walls catching the early light, then a short walk into the Dades Gorge before departure. The gorge road climbs tight hairpin bends between red-rock canyon walls before opening onto the plain heading east towards Tinghir.
Todra Gorge is the first significant stop of the day, approximately one hour from the Dades Valley. The gorge is a narrow canyon cut by the Todra River through the eastern High Atlas, with sheer limestone walls rising around 300 metres on either side. In the narrowest section the walls press to within 10 metres of each other and the river runs cold between them. A proper walk into the canyon rather than a brief roadside stop reveals the full scale. Todra is also one of North Africa's premier rock-climbing destinations, and in season you will see climbers on the vertical faces above you. Allow at least 45 minutes here.
From Tinghir, the road continues south-east through the Draa-Tafilalet region, the landscape becoming progressively more arid as the mountains recede. You arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, in time for the camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Erg Chebbi rises to 150 metres at its highest point, and moving through the dunes on camelback as the sky shifts from pale gold to orange and then violet is an experience that photographs do not adequately prepare you for. Dinner at the desert camp is followed by Gnawa music around the fire and, on clear nights, a Milky Way that is simply not visible from anywhere near a city. Overnight in the desert camp at Erg Chebbi.
Day 3: Merzouga ⇒ M'fis ⇒ Nomadic Families ⇒ Community Gardens ⇒ Dayet Srij
Wake before dawn. The Sahara at sunrise is cold and perfectly still, and watching the sand shift from shadow to pale gold to burning orange as the sun clears the horizon is one of those moments guests consistently describe long after the tour is finished. Spend the early morning at your own pace in the dunes before returning for breakfast.
The rest of the day explores the Merzouga area beyond the dunes. The morning heads towards M'fis, where nomadic Saharan families live between the desert and the pre-Saharan plains. Your guide introduces you to families whose daily life unfolds in a landscape that most visitors only pass through. You are welcomed with mint tea, and the conversation covers how the desert is navigated, where water is found, how the seasons are read, and what daily life looks like when the dunes are your horizon. It is a genuine encounter, not a staged one, and typically lasts one to two hours.
From M'fis the route continues to the community gardens on the edge of the oasis, where date palms, vegetables, and herbs are cultivated using traditional underground irrigation channels. The contrast between the green of the gardens and the surrounding hammada is striking, and the ingenuity of desert agriculture becomes immediately apparent.
In the afternoon the route passes the seasonal lake at Dayet Srij. When water is present, typically from winter through early spring, the lake attracts flamingos, migratory waders, and a range of desert birds in numbers that seem impossible given the surrounding landscape. In drier seasons the dried lake bed has its own austere beauty. Your guide will advise on what to expect on the day. As the afternoon light changes and the day cools, you return to your Night 3 accommodation.
Option A: Stay a second night in the desert camp (same camp as Night 2) · Option B: Move to a riad in Merzouga for a pool, a comfortable bed, and an easier early start before the long return drive on Day 4. See the Accommodation section for riad options by tier.
Day 4: Merzouga ⇒ Rissani ⇒ Alnif ⇒ N'Kob ⇒ Draa Valley ⇒ Agdz ⇒ Ouarzazate ⇒ Marrakech
An early departure from Merzouga is essential on Day 4. The return to Marrakech takes an entirely different road from the outward journey, heading west through terrain that most desert tours never reach. It is a long day of driving, but the landscape changes constantly and dramatically from start to finish.
The first stop is Rissani, approximately 35 kilometres from Merzouga. This small desert town was for centuries the caravan capital of the Tafilalet, the southern oasis that once sent salt and gold across the Sahara to sub-Saharan Africa. It is also the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, which has ruled Morocco since the 17th century. The old medina and the ruins of Sijilmassa, the great medieval caravan city, give a vivid sense of how important this remote corner of Morocco once was.
From Rissani the road turns west towards Alnif, passing through landscapes of volcanic black rock and pale hammada that look nothing like the red dunes of Erg Chebbi. Alnif sits in fossil country at the foot of the Jbel Saghro, the dramatic Anti-Atlas range whose dark, eroded peaks form a stark backdrop. The town is known for its trilobite and orthoceras fossils, and the market stalls along the road offer the most diverse selection of prehistoric marine specimens in Morocco. A brief stop here is worthwhile.
West of Alnif the road passes through Tazzarine and then reaches N'Kob, known as the village of 45 kasbahs. Ksar towers and fortified granaries dot the hillsides above the village in extraordinary density, many of them still inhabited. N'Kob sits at the junction between the Anti-Atlas and the Draa Valley, and it is here that the character of the landscape changes for the last time. From N'Kob the road descends north to Agdz, where the Draa Valley begins in earnest.
The Draa Valley is Morocco's longest valley and one of the great landscapes of North Africa. The road follows the Draa River north through a continuous corridor of date palms, rose-coloured kasbahs, and mud-brick villages that have lined this route since the medieval caravans made their way between Marrakech and Timbuktu. The valley has a quality of fertile abundance that is genuinely startling after the volcanic landscapes of the Anti-Atlas. North of the valley the road climbs through the Tizi n'Tinififft Pass in the Anti-Atlas foothills before descending into Ouarzazate. From Ouarzazate the road west retraces the final section of the outward journey across the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka, arriving back in Marrakech in the evening.

Why Choose This Tour
Most round trips from Marrakech to the desert return the same way they went. This tour does not. The outward journey covers the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, and the northern approach to the Sahara. The return takes the southern road through Rissani, the Anti-Atlas, N'Kob, and the full length of the Draa Valley. Four days, four entirely different landscapes, not a single road repeated.
The full Day 3 in the Merzouga area adds the kind of depth that a single overnight simply cannot provide. The nomadic family visits near M'fis and the community gardens and seasonal lake at Dayet Srij are experiences that take time to reach and even more time to appreciate.
The Draa Valley on the return is one of the great drives in North Africa: Morocco's longest valley, once the main caravan road between Marrakech and Timbuktu, running north through a continuous corridor of palm groves and ancient kasbahs.
Who Is This Tour For
The ideal format if you fly into and out of Marrakech Menara Airport. A complete loop with no road repeated and the full range of southern Morocco covered.
High Atlas, Dades, Todra, Erg Chebbi, Anti-Atlas, Draa Valley, and the Tizi n'Tichka on the way home. More distinct landscapes in four days than most Morocco trips cover in two weeks.
The nomadic family visits near M'fis, the community gardens, and Rissani and its caravan history offer an encounter with the human side of the desert that the dunes alone cannot provide.
The private version is fully flexible on pace and stops. The shared-departure version is excellent value for solo travellers looking to meet others on the road.
Know Before You Go
October to April is the most comfortable window for the desert section. Erg Chebbi regularly exceeds 40°C in July and August. The Draa Valley and Anti-Atlas are pleasant year-round, though the Tizi n'Tichka can have snow from December to February. The road remains open year-round in normal conditions.
The return from Merzouga to Marrakech via the Draa Valley covers approximately 560 km and takes around nine hours with stops. An early departure from Merzouga, no later than 7am, is essential. The Rissani, Alnif, N'Kob, and Draa Valley stops break the drive naturally and the landscape changes dramatically throughout.
The return road via Alnif and the Draa Valley is paved throughout and in good condition. It passes through the Anti-Atlas mountains and the volcanic Jbel Saghro range before descending into the Draa Valley at Agdz. It is a slower, more rural road than the main N10, and the driving time reflects this. The scenery is exceptional.
The seasonal lake is most likely to hold water between November and April. In wet years it attracts flamingos and migratory birds. In dry years the lake bed may be mostly empty. Your guide will advise on what to expect. The oasis palms and desert vegetation around the lake are worth visiting in any season.
If an early Day 4 departure is the priority, the riad in Merzouga is the better practical choice. If a second desert night matters more than convenience, staying in the camp is easy to arrange. Let us know your preference when booking and we will confirm both options in advance.
Cash in Moroccan dirhams is essential throughout the southern route. ATMs are available in Ouarzazate and Tinghir on the outward journey but are scarce between Merzouga and Ouarzazate on the return. Carry sufficient cash from the start of Day 3.

What Our Guests Say
"The return via Alnif and the Draa Valley was completely unexpected. We had never heard of N'Kob and it was one of the most beautiful places we saw in Morocco. The Draa palm groves in the late afternoon are something I will not forget."
"Four completely different days. The Dades and Todra going there, the dunes and the nomads in the middle, then the Anti-Atlas and the Draa Valley coming back. Both flights were through Marrakech and the loop format was perfect. Not a single road repeated."
"The visit to the nomadic family on Day 3 was worth the whole trip on its own. Then we came back through Rissani and the Draa Valley and I realised I had seen more of southern Morocco in four days than most people do in two weeks."
