4-Day Casablanca to Marrakech via Fes, Sahara and Ait Ben Haddou
4-Day Casablanca to Marrakech Tour Overview
The 4-Day Casablanca to Marrakech Tour connects Morocco's two largest cities by way of the country's most rewarding landscapes. Rather than taking the direct route, it arcs east through Fes and the Middle Atlas before dropping south to the Sahara at Merzouga, then returns west through Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou before arriving in Marrakech.
The tour is designed as a one-way journey with no road driven twice. Day 1 combines a long transfer with a guided walking tour of the Fes medina. Day 2 is the most scenic driving day, crossing the cedar forests and Ziz Valley gorge to reach the Sahara. Day 3 turns west through Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley. Day 4 delivers Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas crossing before the final arrival in Marrakech.
Available as a private tour with a dedicated vehicle and driver, or as a shared group departure on fixed dates.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 ⇢ Casablanca ⇢ Guided Tour of Fes
Your driver meets you at your Casablanca hotel or Mohammed V Airport in the morning. The drive northeast to Fes takes roughly five hours, with a stop along the way for coffee and a stretch.
On arrival in Fes you are met by a licensed local guide who takes you on a walking tour of the Fes el-Bali medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has changed little in a thousand years. You will visit the Chouara Tanneries, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the ancient souks, and the labyrinth of streets that still operate as they did in the medieval era.
The evening is yours to explore at your own pace. Overnight in a traditional riad in the heart of Fes.
Day 2 ⇢ Fes ⇢ Ifrane ⇢ Cedar Forest ⇢ Ziz Valley ⇢ Merzouga
An early start on the most scenic driving day of the tour. You leave Fes and head south through Ifrane, a town that looks as though it was lifted from the Swiss Alps and set down in the Middle Atlas mountains. The contrast with the ancient medina you left behind is striking.
From Ifrane, the route passes through the cedar forests of Azrou, where Barbary macaques live wild in the trees and frequently approach the road. The landscape then shifts dramatically as you descend into the Ziz Valley, one of Morocco's great palm-lined gorges. The road follows the Ziz river south through oasis towns and red rock canyons before the terrain opens onto the Tafilalet plain and, at last, the edge of the Sahara.
You arrive at Merzouga in the late afternoon with time to mount a camel and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the light turns gold. Dinner and Gnawa music at the desert camp. Overnight in the Berber desert camp.
Day 3 ⇢ Merzouga ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Dades Valley
Wake before sunrise to watch the Erg Chebbi dunes shift through their morning colours. The silence and the scale of the dune field at dawn are something most travellers describe as the most memorable moment of the entire trip. Breakfast at camp, then the drive begins west.
The first major stop is Todra Gorge, where sheer rock walls rise 300 metres on either side of a clear river running through a canyon that narrows to only a few metres across. A walk of twenty to thirty minutes through the gorge is one of the most dramatic natural experiences in Morocco.
From Todra the route continues west along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Dades Valley, passing rose-growing villages, ancient clay fortresses, and the extraordinary rock formations of the Dades Gorge. Overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades Valley.
Day 4 ⇢ Dades Valley ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Marrakech
The final day covers two of the most iconic stops in southern Morocco before arriving in Marrakech. The morning drive passes through Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa, where major films including Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia have been shot.
Just outside the city is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar built from red clay that rises from the valley floor like something from another era. The climb to the top of the ksar rewards with sweeping views across the Ounila valley.
From Ait Ben Haddou, the route continues north over the High Atlas mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. The descent into the Haouz plain brings you into Marrakech in the late afternoon. Drop-off at your hotel or riad. Tour ends here.

Why Choose the 4-Day Casablanca to Marrakech Tour
Most travellers visit Fes and Marrakech but few connect them by road through the Sahara. This tour does exactly that, covering four distinct regions of Morocco in a logical arc: the imperial north, the Middle Atlas, the Sahara, and the High Atlas south. No road is driven twice, and every day brings a completely different landscape.
The inclusion of Ifrane and the cedar forest on Day 2 is one of the route's most underrated strengths. Most tours skip this stretch entirely. It adds less than an hour and introduces a Middle Atlas landscape that almost no international visitor expects to find in Morocco.
The tour is available privately at any time or as a shared group departure on fixed dates. On a private tour, stops, pace, and timing are entirely adjustable.
Who Is This Tour For
This tour is well suited to first-time visitors to Morocco who want to see more than just Marrakech and the desert in a short trip. Starting in Casablanca and ending in Marrakech means no doubling back, and the four-day structure is compact enough for those with a limited schedule.
Travellers flying into Casablanca and out of Marrakech will find this tour fits the journey perfectly without requiring any backtracking. Couples will find the combination of the Fes medina, the desert camp, and the canyon landscapes a complete and varied experience. Solo travellers on the shared option will find the route naturally sociable. Day 2 is the longest driving day at approximately six hours; if that concerns you, the private version can be split with an additional night in Midelt.
